The "Il Cervo" Social Promotion Association is active in the Molise region with the aim of safeguarding, enhancing and promoting the local environmental, demo-ethno-anthropological, archaeological, historical and cultural heritage.
Founded on September 14, 1993, the association carries on with passion and dedication the tradition of the Rite of the Deer Man, known in local dialect as Gl'Cierv.
This rite, revived about fifty years ago after a period of abandonment, represents one of the oldest and most fascinating popular traditions of Molise.
Main Event - The Rite of the Deer Man
The Rite of the Deer Man (Gl’Cierv) is a ritual reenactment rich in symbolism, which has its roots in the popular culture and oral tradition of the local community.
Its origins, passed down orally for generations, are lost in time. After an interruption during the Second World War, the event was resumed about fifty years ago thanks to the commitment of the local community. In 1993, with the birth of the Cultural Association "Il Cervo", it took on an organized form, becoming one of the most significant events of the Molise Carnival and attracting the attention of the public and national media every year.
Place and period of performance
The rite takes place every year on the last Sunday of Carnival in Castelnuovo al Volturno, a hamlet of the municipality of Rocchetta a Volturno, Province of Isernia (IS), Molise, Italy.
